A Toledo native. Central Catholic, then Biology and four varsity letters in tennis at the University of Toledo, then his Doctorate in Dental Surgery at The Ohio State University. He likes to tell patients healthy mouth, healthy body, healthy heart, and means it.
Committed to continuing education, and a member of the Academy for Dental Sleep Medicine for over ten years.

The problem: the injection is the part people dread.
A topical gel first, then a small preliminary shot so there is no burning, and only then the numbing agent, which reaches deep into the teeth, gums and tissue.
The problem: anxiety bad enough to keep you away.
Oral conscious sedation instead of an IV. Dr. Schmakel prescribes Halcion to take before you come in: you stay awake, but relaxed rather than afraid.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a pause or stop in your breathing while you sleep, and it can be life-threatening. Dr. Larry treats it with Oral Appliance Therapy: a custom mouthpiece that moves the lower jaw forward to open the airway.

We are a Delta Dental Premier provider, a Superior Dental Care Preferred Network provider, and we accept Paramount Elite dental plans, including Medicare plans. We are also happy to submit to every other insurance company for you.
It depends on the treatment and your insurance, because the cost of care is very patient-specific. We offer a free consultation to assess what you need, and can give you cost information once it is done.
Your insurance card and your completed new patient forms. If the forms did not reach you before the visit, please arrive 15 minutes early to fill them in.
Plan on about two hours for a first visit, which includes a full set of x-rays free of charge, a comprehensive exam with photographs, and a proper talk about your health history and goals. A cleaning takes about an hour, a filling an hour or less.
We are happy to see walk-ins for dental emergencies during business hours. Please call ahead, or call on the way, so we are ready for you. Routine visits are by appointment.
Yes. Numbing here is a three-step process: a topical gel, a small preliminary shot so there is no burning, then the numbing agent itself. For severe anxiety or complex procedures Dr. Schmakel can prescribe Halcion, "the happy pill", as an alternative to IV sedation. Call ahead so you have time to fill it.
Yes. When you become a patient we make custom whitening trays for you, and you get a free tube of whitening gel after each cleaning for as long as Dr. Schmakel is practising. You need to keep your regular hygiene appointments to keep receiving the refills.
A digital scan captures the shape of your teeth, the crown is designed in 3-D, then milled from ceramic on our own machine and coloured to match your other teeth. It is fitted the same day, usually within one to three hours.
